Overview Of Gorakhpur

History of Gorakhpur, Uttar Pradesh, India reads like a fascinating tale. Gorakhpur owes its name to ascetic Gorakshnath, who was a distinguished saint of ‘Nath Sampradaya’. A celebrated shrine ‘Gorakhnath’ was built in his tribute at the same location where he practiced austerities. Gorakhpur was a part of the famous kingdom of Koshal, one of sixteen mahajanpadas in 6th Century B.C. The earliest known monarch ruling over this region with his capital at Ayodhya was IKSVAKU, who founded the solar dynasty of Kshatriya. It produced a number of illustratious kings till the accession of Ram, who was the greatest ruler of this dynasty. Since then, it remained an integral part of the erstwhile empires of Maurya, Shunga, Kushana , Gupta and Harsha dynasties. According to tradition, the Tharu king, Mausen of Madan Singh (900-950 A.D.) ruled over Gorakhpur city and the adjoining area.

1. Gorakhnath Temple : The Gorakhnath temple is a temple of the Nath monastic order group of the Nath tradition. The name Gorakhnath derives from the medieval saint, Gorakshanath, a yogi who travelled widely across India and authored a number of texts that form a part of the canon of Nath Sampradaya.
2. Gita Press  : Gita Press is the world’s largest publisher of Hindu religious texts. It is located in Gorakhpur city of India’s Uttar Pradesh state. It was founded in 1923 by Jaya Dayal Goyanka and Ghanshyam Das Jalan for promoting the principles of Sanatana Dharma.
3. Rail Museum : The rail museum of Gorakhpur is near to Gorakhpur railway station. This museum is managed by northern railway. It is in the shape of amusement park. A toy train also run there. Many information about Indian railway is shown here. 
4. Ramgarh Tal : Ramgarh Tal is a lake located in Gorakhpur, Uttar Pradesh, India. In 1970, the lake covered an area of 723 hectares with a circumference of 18 kilometres in its maximum water spread, now only covering 678 hectares. Ramgarh Tal is an important landmark in Gorakhpur.

Buddha Museum : Government Bauddha Museum Gorakhpur harbour antiquities collected from eastern region of Uttar Pradesh, which has been the ancient leading centre of spiritual and mystic movements having its root is the Shraman and Vedic traditions. The area abounds in historical and archaeological sites such as Lahuradeva, Ramnagarghat, Lumbini, Devdaha, Kapilvastu (Piprahwa) Kopia, Sohagaura, Kushinagar, Pawa and so on yielding important finds.
6. Vir Bahadur Singh Planetarium : Is a tourist attraction in Gorakhpur, Uttar Pradesh, India. It has been run by the Council of Science & Technology, Uttar Pradesh since 21 December 2009. This planetarium runs three daily, 45-minute shows at 1pm, 3pm and 5pm. It has a dome size of 18m and a seating capacity of 395. It is based on digital technology, and six equipment’s of CRT, Evans and Sutherland are installed here.
